Bert Davis founded Bert Davis Executive Search in 1977 and has been its Chief Executive Officer ever since. For nearly 35 years Bert has built a dynamic business that has adapted, developed, and thrived during periods of enormous change in the publishing and information industries.
Trained as an engineer at New York’s Polytechnic Institute, Bert honed his passion for publishing and information businesses in the newspaper industry. After a successful stint with an executive recruiting firm, he decided to launch his own business in support of the publishing industry. His entrepreneurial instincts, his love for people, and his record of identifying and bringing the best possible talent into successful roles has made Bert Davis Executive Search the most recognized brand in the industries it serves.

Bert has developed an enviable and inimitable methodology for partnering with companies for the long-term in building their strategies for profitable growth. Becoming that DNA for success has required building trust, teamwork, mentoring, and a deep knowledge of the information and publishing industries that are the hallmark of Bert Davis Executive Search.

When not immersed in the industry he loves, Bert devotes his attention and focus to his family, industry organizations, and numerous charities.

Scott Lubeck

Scott Lubeck
Executive Vice President / President, Executive Consulting Services

Scott Lubeck was CTO at Harvard Business School Publishing and Vice President of Technology at Wolters Kluwer Health, Professional and Education. He has extensive experience in leading change in companies that are undergoing the transformation from print to digital publishing and delivery. In these initiatives he brings both an understanding and mastery of systems evaluation and process analysis and a practical knowledge of the human resources required to enable profitable growth from technology investment.

At both Harvard and Wolters Kluwer, Scott built and managed successful teams of IT professionals who possessed the core competencies required to move legacy businesses into the future. His hallmark has been maximizing the strategic value of technology in publishing.

Scott has also started technology companies and been a leader in high-growth businesses. In this arena, he was most recently Vice President and General Manager at LibreDigital, a provider of digital publishing solutions to the information and publishing businesses. He was Executive Director of the Book Industry Study group before joining Bert Davis Executive Search and Consulting Services.

Lauren Aaron

Lauren Aaron Senior Vice President

Lauren Aaron, Senior Vice President, joined Bert Davis Executive Search in 1994. She specializes in senior management positions including CEOs, Presidents/General Managers, Chief Financial Officers, and Vice Presidents of Product Development, Marketing, Sales, and IT.

Lauren’s direct experience in the information industry cuts across multiple media from print to online databases to real-time news and data. Prior to joining Bert Davis, she was Director of Global Marketing with McGraw-Hill/Standard & Poor’s Commodities Information Division. Lauren began her career in the magazine industry with both professional and consumer publications. She is a graduate of Lehigh University with a B.A. in Journalism.

Kathy Berlowe

Kathy Berlowe Executive Vice President

Kathy Berlowe joined Bert Davis in 1990, after having had a substantial career in the publishing industry. As an Executive Vice President for the search team, Kathy works with a wide variety of companies, from traditional blue-chip publishing firms to new media companies in e-commerce and e-learning.

Prior to coming to Bert Davis, Kathy spent thirteen years in the publishing industry working as a sales and marketing specialist in a variety of areas. Her experience in both the publishing and the search businesses makes Kathy a strong contributor to the Bert Davis group and a knowledgeable consultant to the industry at large.

Jeanne Bertelle

Jeanne Bertelle Vice President

Jeanne Bertelle, Vice President, has been with Bert Davis Executive Search for 7 years. She works on senior management searches in all disciplines and functions. Jeanne came to Bert Davis with extensive experience in all areas of Human Resources, including employee relations, recruitment, diversity, management training, acquisition and divestiture management, organizational development, succession planning, and compensation.

Immediately prior to joining Bert Davis, Jeanne was with The McGraw-Hill Companies for 16 years, where she was Senior Director of Human Resources. At McGraw-Hill, Jeanne partnered with a variety of McGraw-Hill businesses including the Professional and Reference Group, the Medical Publishing Group, the Business and Finance Publishing Group, the School Group, the Higher Education Group, and the Computer Information Group.

Prior to McGraw-Hill, Jeanne was with Doubleday & Co. for 11 years, where she was Human Resources Manager, with responsibility for employee relations, recruitment, diversity, training, and compensation.

Jeanne has a BA in English from Brooklyn College, Masters credits in Drama from Hunter College, and has completed numerous professional education courses.

Jim Conley

Jim Conley Manager, Research & Development

Jim Conley, Manager of Research and Development at Bert Davis, is skilled in financial analysis, accounting, marketing and business development. With over 15 years experience in the graphic design and restaurant industries, his combination of strong analytical and interpersonal skills combined with business savvy have contributed to a number of organizations’ bottom line. Jim is proficient in multiple operating systems and software applications and has a track record of improving operations and increasing profitability.

Sally Dougan

Sally Dougan Executive Vice President

Sally Dougan, Executive Vice President, joined the Bert Davis group in its early days and has been instrumental in expanding its reach, growing the company and establishing it as a premier search and consulting group in the publishing and information industries.

Sally and her team place Presidents, GMs, VPs, and Directors in large commercial professional and consumer publishing firms, and she has developed a substantial practice in placing Directors at University Presses, and Publishing Directors at not-for-profit associations and societies.

Prior to joining Bert Davis, Sally was GM of the New York office of a Midwestern general publisher, and before that she was been Assistant Director of Marketing of Cambridge University Press, where she developed a proactive 20-person department.

As part of her continuing professional education, Sally earned the Certificate in Adult Career and Life Planning from New York University and is a graduate of Coach University. She was two-term President of the 150-member Chapter of the Association of Career Professionals International and currently plays a leadership role in The Transition Network association.

A graduate of Middlebury College, Sally focused on European History and Russian language. Among her outside interests are photography/scanned flora, gardening, reading, home renovation, and lifelong learning.

Mary B. Gallatin

Mary B. Gallatin Vice President

Mary B. Gallatin, has direct experience in technology, publishing, and media with world-class companies from IBM to Time Inc. and Dow Jones. Prior to joining Bert Davis, she was Chief Marketing Officer of the Wall Street Journal Office Network. Mary began her career in the advertising business working across a diverse range of B2C and B2B businesses. She has her MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business and her BA from the University of Pennsylvania.

Mary comes to Bert Davis with extensive experience building, leading, and motivating teams. With this experience, Mary has developed a rigorous and selective approach to hiring. She brings this same thoughtful and disciplined methodology to her clients at Bert Davis.

Kristy Johnson

Kristi Johnston Director of Marketing & Research

Kristi Johnston has been with Bert Davis Executive Search since 2004. As Marketing & Research Director, she works with the entire team on searches in all areas of the publishing, information, and new media fields.

Kristi came to Bert Davis after graduating from Bucknell University with a degree in English and History. She also attended the Publishing Institute at the University of Denver, where she further cemented her interest in the publishing industry.

David Kornacker

David Kornacker Senior Vice President

David Kornacker, Senior Vice President, joined Bert Davis Executive Search in 1998. At Bert Davis he has worked with senior executives and publishing professionals in areas ranging from product development, marketing and sales to finance, operations and technology. Companies he has worked with have included established industry leaders such as Thomson, Elsevier, McGraw-Hill, Pearson, John Wiley & Sons, and Wolters Kluwer as well as new media start-ups, outsourcing firms and information technology companies.

Prior to joining Bert Davis, David was President of The French Publishers’ Agency, a New York based literary agency that represents most of France’s major publishers in the U.S. market. While leading the agency, he developed relationships with major players in many areas of the American publishing world and sold over 100 French titles into the U.S. market for publication in English translation.

David is a graduate of Columbia College and holds an M.F.A. in Literary Translation from the University of Iowa.

 
Craig Miller

Craig Miller Senior Vice President

Craig Miller was a founding partner of EVN Consulting and co-founder, General Manager and Vice President of LibreDigital. He has more than 20 years experience in strategic product development and marketing in the hi-tech sector and ten years in business development management for Internet-based technology companies.

He is an expert in publishing XML, eBooks, and single-source publishing systems including: multiple content repositories and multiple output types, complex data architecture, rights management, and editorial and production work flows. His focus has been on designing and building scalable digital publishing architectures.

Craig holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering and an M.B.A. from the Executive Program at the University of Houston.

Linda Rascher

Linda Rascher Senior Vice President

Linda Rascher is a Senior Vice President at Bert Davis Executive Search, Inc., and has been with the firm since 1989. Her field of expertise includes senior-level positions in the communications, media, and publishing industries. At Bert Davis she has worked with executives in the areas of finance, operations, technology, sales, and marketing.

Linda joined Bert Davis after working for an executive search firm specializing in the financial arena. She placed people in all industries and decided to join Bert Davis to focus on one major area – publishing.

Linda brings an entrepreneur’s sensibility to the job. She owned her own company for 10 years which gave her a first-hand understanding of both management and employee issues.

Janine Subel

Janine Subel Vice President

Janine brings to our clients a wealth of experience in recruiting in the areas of finance/accounting, IT and human resources, both in the U.S. and internationally. Prior to joining Bert Davis, Janine was employed with BDO Seidman LLP for 9 1/2 years, including as Director of International Talent Acquisition and Director of Recruiting for the South and West regions. Previously, Janine was at Deloitte Consulting/Roundarch where she focused on hiring IT professionals.

Janine holds a Masters Degree in Industrial Psychology from the University of South Africa and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Witwatersrand. She is based in San Diego, CA.
