Director of Public Affairs

Prestigious scientific society seeks a Director of Public Affairs to lead its effort to provide valuable information to a broader audience. This senior staff member will oversee the translation of findings from scientific articles and reports published in the organization’s journals for print and digital distribution to general readers. The Director will also manage planning for all media activities and maintain relationships with multiple media outlets.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee the day-to-day operations of a growing public outreach program.
• Develop a strategic vision for public affairs activities to keep pace with trends in the organization’s scientific field, especially as reflected in the organization’s journals and annual convention.
• Establish and maintain relationships with general, healthcare, and scientific media for expanded coverage of research published in the organization’s journals.
• Create and monitor online sites and systems for presenting science research findings to the public.
• Track and report on media coverage.
• Expand the organization’s website as a resource for educating the public about the organization’s scientific field.

Qualifications:

• BA/BS; advanced degree and familiarity with science a plus.
• Ten years in science journalism, communications, public affairs, or academic publishing.
• Extensive connections with science writers, editors, and producers in all media (print, online, video, audio).
• Strong writing, verbal, planning, analytical, and organizational skills.
• Excellent editorial judgment.
• Proven ability at leading, mentoring, and supporting staff.
• Project management expertise.
• A collaborative work style.
• The creativity and vision to bring fresh approaches to presenting information to general and professional audiences.
