Executive Editor
Pre-eminent medical society seeks an Executive Editor to launch a new, high-visibility journal with both print and online components. This individual will lead the in-house team for the journal and is responsible for the editorial content of the whole journal. The Executive Editor must be a scientist or clinician and is expected to contribute to the direction and personality of the new journal.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Works jointly with the Editor-in-Chief to provide editorial vision and leadership for the journal, including communicating its scope, determining types of features and balance of topics, and representing it to the scientific community.
- Works in collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief and academic editors to attract and identify high-quality manuscripts.
- Recommends editorial appointments and manages editorial board meetings.
- Networks and maintains relationships with key scientists and physicians to acquire content and stay abreast of advances in the field.
- Discusses and evaluates the scientific merits and novelty of research with scientists and physicians.
- Acquires original research, reviews, and special feature content.
- Selects reviewers, manages the peer-review process, and ensures quality and timely handling of submissions.
- Creates and implements long-term planning, including assessment of publication’s needs in terms of editorial content, production and marketing support, and print and online delivery.
- Provides editorial direction for market research and promotional activities.
- Monitors, evaluates, and reports on the activities of competing information products.
Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in the life sciences or MD.
- Significant senior-level editorial experience in scientific or medical journals publishing.
- Experience evaluating and successfully launching new scientific journals and championing them throughout their lifespan.
