Director, Publications Division
Prestigious scientific society seeks a Director for its Publications Division who will be responsible for leading the development of comprehensive strategies for its publishing activities and overseeing the production, publication, marketing, and sales of its journals, electronic products, and special programs. The Director of the Publications Division will work closely with the Executive Director of the society and other senior leadership members on developing the overarching strategic direction of new product and business development with a particular emphasis on rapidly growing international markets.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and successful implementation of a strategic plan to enhance revenue-producing information products, new electronic product development, and extension of existing products onto new delivery media and into new markets.
- Serve as a member of Senior Management Team. Advise Executive Director on policy and programmatic issues.
- Identify and exploit new product and business opportunities in non-traditional product areas, such as publishing software, and in rapidly growing markets such as China.
- Develop new international publishing initiatives and programs, reinforce existing, and build new relationships with societies around the world.
- Provide for appropriate levels of interaction between journal editors and staff. Provide general supervision of journal editorial and manuscript administrative functions.
- Establish appropriate contact with external vendors, negotiate contracts, and develop recommendations for multimillion-dollar contractual services.
- Determine resource allocation within the publications division and monitor division's budgets on an ongoing basis. Provide monthly review of financial statements, estimates, cost/benefits analysis, and other non-dollar benchmarking in areas of responsibility.
- Perform internal management functions, including setting publications division goals, overseeing staff development and professional growth, providing coaching and supervision, developing performance objectives, and conducting performance reviews.
Requirements:
- College degree; additional degrees/course work in publications preferred.
- 10-15 years’ progressive experience in senior-level publications management; scientific society publishing experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated success in innovative product development and international business development; experience in business development involving Asian partners a significant plus.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
- Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
- Strong focus on staff development and team-building; solid skills as a coach and mentor.
- Ability to see “Big Picture” and act to benefit the organization.
- Strong leadership and strategic planning skills.
