Kathy Berlowe has been with Bert Davis Executive Search for over ten years. She currently is a Vice President for the search team working with such diverse companies as America Online, and e-commerce startups to the blue-chip publishing firms like John Wiley, McGraw-Hill and Simon & Schuster.

Prior to joining Bert Davis, Kathy spent many years in publishing, working for such companies as Holt, Rinehart and Winston’s college division, Scholastic Inc. and Cahner's Publishing. Beginning as an editorial assistant, she then held positions as a copywriter, promotion manager, product manager and advertising sales rep for respectively Holt, Scholastic, Van Nostrand Reinhold, and Cahner’s.

Over the years, Kathy had been recruited and placed in some of the best positions in her career by the people at Bert Davis. She had always had a special interest in the recruitment business, and admired the quality and insight provided by the Bert Davis staff. In 1989, Kathy joined the firm and has been happily helping people build their careers ever since. Her understanding of the business, having played many different roles in publishing over the years, coupled with a positive reputation among candidates and clients makes Kathy a strong contributor to the Bert Davis group. Kathy lives in New York City but enjoys escaping to the mountains whenever she can.

Wendy Baker has been a member of the Bert Davis senior executive team for over 15 years. She is currently the Senior Vice President for the Magazine Division where she continues to be instrumental in developing her area of specialization in the placement of middle to senior level consumer magazine, trade publication and newspaper professionals. Wendy conducts searches in the areas of circulation, advertising sales management, advertising marketing and promotion, as well as research.
Prior to joining Bert Davis, Wendy had a successful career in advertising with DDB Needham, as well as magazine and newspaper publishing including positions as Advertising Manager at The New Yorker and at The New York Times, covering the categories of Finance, Beauty, Home Furnishing, Travel, Luxury and Fashion Accessories.
Wendy graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Sociology from Queens College.

Marketing Manager

A prestigious scientific, technical, and medical publisher is seeking a Marketing Manager to oversee development and implementation of effective marketing and promotional collateral and tools. Reporting to the VP, Publishing and Communications, the Marketing Manager will foster the brand through brochures, flyers and other print materials; e-mail communications vehicles; and both online and offline advertisements.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop innovative, highly focused, cost-effective and non-traditional marketing and promotional tools and techniques, including viral marketing, web- and e-mail-based campaigns, leveraging professional online communities, etc.
  • Develop and implement program to monitor, analyze and report key success measures, regularly updating VP, Publishing and Communications on progress toward agreed-upon goals.
  • Develop with the VP, Publishing and Communications and then oversee the marketing budget that will allow for creativity within the cost parameters that have been approved.
  • Manage in-house creative services team and outside vendors, including graphic designers, printers and others as needed, insuring maintenance of cohesive branding and cost-effective production and dissemination of all marketing and communications materials.
  • Working with the VP, Publishing and Communications, other Senior Management, and program staff, identify and build effective cross-marketing and alliances with professional societies, academic institutions, industry, publishers and others to promote activities using a range of tools including Web site listings and mailing list, advertising, and content swaps.

Requirements:

  • BA or BS in Marketing and 5+ years management experience in marketing or comparable area required
  • Demonstrated expertise and success in online marketing tools and tactics and viral marketing techniques
  • Superior management skills, especially project management
  • Strong copywriting skill
  • Excellent interpersonal, networking and oral/written communications skills
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and communicate effectively with internal and external constituencies
  • Experience with professional or membership organizations and related database tools strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with scientific or related communities a plus
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and digital media technologies a plus
