Chief Financial Officer

A leading, growth-oriented electronic publisher in the humanities and social sciences seeks a Chief Financial Officer to develop and direct the implementation of strategic business and/or operational plans, projects, programs, and systems. This position reports directly to the President and is a member of the Board of Directors.

 Responsibilities:

  • Approve and direct changes and improvements in automated financial and management information systems. Key areas include recommending and implementing a royalties system and a subscription database system.
  • Prepare and reconcile consolidated financial reports for multi-currency companies.
  • Coordinate and oversee the preparation of financial statements, perform financial analyses, and prepare management-level state-of-the-business reports. Analyze cash flow, cost controls, and expenses to guide business leaders.
  • Establish and implement short- and long-range departmental goals, objectives, and policies, and develop and implement finance, accounting, billing, and auditing procedures.
  • Assist and direct foreign company setups, including registration, financial structure, operational procedures, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax and filing requirements.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate internal control safeguards.
  • Interact with other managers to provide consultative support to planning initiatives.
  • Ensure records systems are maintained in accordance with GAAP.
  • Serve on planning and policy-making committees.
  • Represent the company externally to media, government agencies, funding agencies, and the general public.

 Requirements:

  • Masters Degree in Finance or Accounting.
  • Ten years of experience in a senior-level finance or accounting position with five of those years spent in a publishing or media company.
  • CPA designation is a plus but not required.
  • Extensive experience in strategic planning and execution, knowledge of contracting, negotiating, and change management, and a strong knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Outstanding professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings; excellent motivational abilities.
