We are pleased to announce that the American Institute of Physics (AIP), a prominent U.S. non-profit scientific publisher and physics outreach organization, has appointed John S. Haynes as Vice President of Publishing. Haynes will take the helm of a publishing business that provides specialized print and digital production, hosting, and subscription/fulfillment services for more than 170 science and engineering journals.
Haynes brings a long resume of experience to AIP, most recently as Editorial Director of the Royal Society of Chemistry, where he spearheaded new journal development and the establishment of international offices. Prior to that, he spent 17 years in publisher and business development roles at the Institute of Physics Publishing in the UK.
Haynes, who will start at AIP in early 2009, sees tremendous opportunities for scientific publishing as digital communications expand around the world. "The Web allows the publishing business to break out of a model that has worked well for centuries, but which now demands innovative responses to increased content, new technologies, and changing sales and access models. With its strategic investment in Scitation C3, the next generation of its online hosting platform, and its more than 75 years of expertise in scientific publishing, AIP is extremely well placed to play a leadership role in these exciting and challenging times," Haynes believes.
